Description:  1.0 FTE Secondary School Counselor at School

Site specific information: Focusing on A- K Alpha Students 

Job Summary:  To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans that hold promise for their personal fulfillment as mature and responsible men and womenLead counseling groups, teach social-emotional learning groups, and assist in the MTSS process for behavior.  Position requires knowledge of academic scheduling, academic counseling, test management, community outreach, career and college readiness, Senior Award Night ceremony and knowledge of a trauma-sensitive school model. Knowledge of SEL and ACES preferred. 

Qualifications:  Alaska Certificate Type C with an endorsement in Counseling

Essential Duties:

1Provides assistance to students in course and subject selection.2Obtains and disseminates occupational information to students.3Assists students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and works with students in developing education and occupation plans.4Works with students to resolve educational handicaps, to prevent drop-outs, to discover and develop special abilities, and to evaluate career interests and choices.5Registers new students and provides an orientation to the students about the school.6Works with students on an individualized basis to help students solve personal problems, develops both a self-understanding and an understanding of others as each student grows and matures.7Plans relevant guidance trips for students, and guides students in both school and community activities.8Works with students in the preparation, processing of college, scholarship, and employment application; makes recommendation for admissions and scholarships, and provides student information to colleges and potential employers according to district policy.9Maintains student records, such as:  attendance records, cumulative progress records, activity records, and uniform transcript records.10Confers with parents and teachers when necessary.11Assists in orientation of new faculty, provides inservice training to teachers regarding guidance and counseling issues.12Advises administrators and faculty on matters of student discipline.13Interprets school objectives and guidance program to students, parents, and the community.14Assists in arranging for tutors and summer school work of students.15Attends I.E.P. meetings as required.16Promotes positive image of school district and positive public relations at all times.17Other duties as assigned.


Physical Requirements:  Light Work:  Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.
